Farm-to-Table Holiday Appetizers
My middle son came home from college last night. When I hugged him, I said “I get for you a whole week!!!” And he replied, “Actually, nine days, mom!” Nine days!!! Let’s make this count!
Personally, I’m clocking out at work around noon on Wednesday and not looking back until Monday after Thanksgiving. I’ll be cleaning - because what kind of psychopath puts Christmas decorations on top of dirt?!? I’ll be cooking. If you know me, you know that cooking dinner every night is not my best skill. But spending a day in the kitchen for a special holiday/family meal is where I shine. I find it relaxing and therapeutic. If you know me, you also know that I have not done any shopping for the Thanksgiving Day feast. This weekend should be dandy. I’ll get there…
The holidays are my favorite excuse to get my family together. My kids run in different directions now. We have loose plans of hiking, Christmas lights at Phipps and some card games. I better keep the apps coming.
Let’s be honest — the best conversations always start before the meal even hits the plate. I love appetizers that feel fresh and intentional — things that look beautiful, taste amazing, and feel like they came straight from the farm stand.
This season, I’m all about earthy flavors, warm textures, and colorful, seasonal ingredients. Whether you’re hosting, bringing a dish, or just grazing while the turkey roasts, these appetizers set the tone for a cozy, connected holiday.

There’s something about roasted beets that just feels like fall. This crostini layers creamy whipped goat cheese, sweet roasted beets, and a drizzle of honey on crisp baguette slices. The color is stunning — deep ruby with bright herbs — and it tastes like the season itself.

These little pastries look fancy but are deceptively simple. Flaky puff pastry holds a savory mix of wild mushrooms, garlic, and thyme cream. They smell incredible baking and pair perfectly with red wine by the fire. They disappear quickly, so make extra.

Crisp phyllo shells, creamy brie, thinly sliced apples, and a drizzle of hot honey — these are sweet, salty, and completely addictive. They’re easy to make ahead and pop in the oven right before guests arrive. Bonus: they make your kitchen smell amazing.

These bite-sized beauties are full of color and comfort. Roasted sweet potatoes topped with tangy cranberry chutney and crumbled goat cheese — a lighter, modern take on traditional holiday flavors.

The easiest win of the night. A mix of green and black olives warmed with olive oil, orange peel, rosemary, and garlic. It’s rustic, fragrant, and instantly elevates any cheese board. Perfect for sipping and snacking.
Crispy Polenta Bites with Pesto & Sun-Dried Tomato
Crisp-edged squares of polenta topped with basil pesto and sun-dried tomatoes — hearty, colorful, and vegetarian-friendly. They look beautiful on a wooden board and taste like a little bite of Italy.
Each of these recipes brings a touch of comfort and color to the season. Whether you’re hosting a full house or just inviting a few friends over, they’re the kind of dishes that make people linger a little longer around the kitchen island — which, honestly, is the best part of the holidays.
